
How to Stop Your Brake Pads from Cracking During Curing
Curing brake pads is a bit of a balancing act. You need the heat to get all the way through to the center, but you can’t just blast it. If you crank the heat too fast, the outside hardens into a shell while the inside is still wet. That creates a lot of internal pressure. The result? Pores, bubbles, and those annoying surface cracks that ruin a good batch. We use shortwave infrared (IR) lamps to fix this. It’s all about managing how much heat actually hits the surface. The “Skinning” Problem Here’s the thing: when the surface cures too quickly, it traps gases inside the friction material. Those volatiles have nowhere to go, so they basically blow holes through the structure from the inside out. By using precision IR arrays, you can tweak the wattage. The goal is to make sure the heat sinks in evenly. When the temperature difference between the core and the surface stays low, the pad doesn’t freak out under the thermal stress. No stress, no cracks. The Gear and the Heat We usually go with high-wattage quartz lamps. These things are powerful. They send a concentrated burst of energy that hits the resin binders directly. But you have to be careful with your power density. If you overdo it with the lamps, you’ll char the surface before the middle even gets warm. I’ve found that staging the heating zones works best. Start low to gently push out the moisture. Once that’s done, ramp it up to full power for the final set. Real Talk: What Happens on the Shop Floor Shortwave IR is fast. Really fast. But it’s also aggressive. You have to get your lamp alignment spot on. If even one tube is slightly skewed, you’ll get hot spots that warp the pad. It’s a pain, but it’s worth the time to get it right. And a heads-up on your electrics: these high-density setups pull a lot of current. Make sure your wiring can actually handle the peak load during ramp-up. There’s nothing worse than tripping a breaker right in the middle of a cycle. Oh, and don’t forget the ventilation. Those curing fumes are no joke—keep the air moving.
